How many hyperbaric sessions do I need?

It is one of the first questions people ask, and there is no single answer. Here is what published protocols have used, what shapes an individual plan, and how the number of sessions changes the cost at Suntree in Rockledge.

Call to book

There is no single number.

If you are asking how many hyperbaric sessions do I need, the answer depends on why you are considering HBOT, your health history, how you tolerate the pressure changes, and what your physician recommends. A website cannot set that number for you.

What we can do is show you the ranges used in research, explain why they vary, and walk through the math so a plan is easier to budget for once it is discussed.

What research protocols have used.

Study protocols vary widely in the number of sessions, their length, the pressure, and the schedule. A few published examples:

  • Many wound-care protocols use roughly 20 to 40 sessions. One diabetic foot ulcer trial used 40 sessions over eight weeks.
  • A sham-controlled trial on post-concussion symptoms used 40 sessions, and found no benefit over sham.
  • A cognitive study in healthy older adults used 60 sessions over three months, at 90 minutes each.
  • A carbon monoxide trial used three sessions within 24 hours, as emergency hospital care.

These numbers belong to specific studies, pressures and patient groups. They are not a prescription for anyone else, and off-label uses such as cognition or concussion are not FDA-cleared. The research cards below link to each source.

What shapes an individual plan.

Before a first session at Suntree, the team reviews your health history and suitability. Some people are not good candidates, for example because of ear or sinus problems, a history of collapsed lung, pregnancy, certain medications, or claustrophobia. Your own physician should be part of that conversation.

After that, frequency and total number depend on your goal, your schedule, how your ears handle pressure changes, and how you feel as sessions go on. Results vary, and more sessions do not always mean more benefit.

How frequency changes the membership math.

At Suntree, a standard 60-minute session is $200. The membership is $199 per month with a three-month commitment, plus $99 per member session. Here is how a total number of sessions compares if they fit within the three-month commitment:

  • 20 sessions: $4,000 at the standard rate. Membership: $597 in fees + (20 × $99 = $1,980) = $2,577.
  • 40 sessions: $8,000 at the standard rate. Membership: $597 + (40 × $99 = $3,960) = $4,557.
  • 60 sessions: $12,000 at the standard rate. Membership: $597 + (60 × $99 = $5,940) = $6,537.

Spreading the same sessions over more months adds $199 for each extra month. At one or two sessions a month, single sessions can cost the same or less. These are arithmetic examples, not recommended numbers. The HBOT cost guide works through monthly totals, and every option is on the pricing page.

Check in as you go.

A plan can change. Tell the team about ear discomfort, sinus congestion, a cold, or any new medication before a session. Sessions can be stopped, and staff are available throughout. If something does not feel right, it is always fine to pause and talk.

It also helps to agree on what you will watch for and when you will review progress with the team and your physician. You can read how a visit works on our HBOT page.

Session counts in these studies reflect their own protocols. They are not a promise that HBOT is appropriate for you or will produce a particular result.

Diabetes Care · 2010

Randomized trial in chronic diabetic foot ulcers

In 94 patients, 40 daily sessions of HBOT or placebo were added to standard wound care. At one year, 52% of the HBOT group had healed ulcers compared with 29% on placebo. A single center, with selected patients.

JAMA Internal Medicine · 2015

Sham-controlled trial for persistent post-concussion symptoms

In 72 service members, 40 sessions of HBOT showed no benefit over sham chamber sessions. Both chamber groups improved more than usual care alone, which the authors linked to placebo-type effects.

Aging · 2020

Cognitive testing in healthy older adults

In 63 adults, 60 sessions over three months were followed by better attention and processing speed than in a control group. The control group had no sham sessions, and participants were not blinded.

New England Journal of Medicine · 2002

Carbon monoxide poisoning: three hospital sessions

In 152 patients, three hyperbaric sessions within 24 hours were followed by fewer cognitive problems at six weeks than normobaric oxygen. This is emergency hospital care, and the trial stopped early.

Questions about your health history or goals are best answered by phone with the Suntree team.

Can I try a single HBOT session before committing to more?

Yes. A standard 60-minute session is $200 with no membership required. The health history and suitability review still comes first. A single session can help you learn how the chamber, the mask and the pressure changes feel before you plan anything longer.

How often are hyperbaric sessions usually scheduled?

Many published protocols scheduled sessions five days a week, but those were research settings with specific goals. Your own schedule is something to discuss with the team and your physician. Work, travel, and how your ears handle pressure changes all play a part.

Do more sessions always mean better results?

No. Results vary from person to person, and some studies found no added benefit. In one sham-controlled trial of post-concussion symptoms, people who had 40 HBOT sessions did no better than people who had sham sessions. More sessions also mean more cost and time.

What happens if I need to pause partway through a plan?

Tell the team. A cold, sinus congestion, ear discomfort or a schedule change can all be reasons to reschedule. Sessions can be stopped, and the team can talk through what a break means for your plan. Ask about membership terms before you join.

Why did the study I read use 90-minute sessions?

Research protocols choose their own session length, pressure and schedule. Some use 90 minutes, and some include air breaks. Suntree's standard HBOT session is 60 minutes. Bring the study with you and ask the team how it compares with sessions in Rockledge.
